Method Selection, Validation and Demonstration of Capability (DOC)

An Essential Component of the Measurement Process

SYNOPSIS

Who Should Attend?

  • Data Users
  • Laboratory Management
  • Quality Assurance and Technical Staff
  • Assessors

This 3-hour interactive webinar reviews materials and techniques that laboratories, data users and assessors can use to successfully address the challenges of method selection, validation and Demonstration of Capability (DOC). A strong focus is on understanding some of the background, theory and practical considerations associated with selecting and validating test methods to be used to generate data of known and documented quality.

The method selection, validation and DOC requirements in the TNI Standard (Module 2 Section 4.5 and Module 4, Sections 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6) tend to be very confusing to laboratory managers and assessors. A good deal of the confusion centers on "what is needed," "why is it needed" and "how does this apply to my laboratory." This workshop explores the "life cycle of measurements and the part that proper selection and validation of test methods plays in the overall generation of data of known and documented quality. This session exposes participants to a body of knowledge on methods and options as well as the practical considerations and benefits to proper validation of methods.

The course will focus on practical definition and use of these concepts, review of current EPA requirements, the 2016 TNI standard, actual real life options and considerations as well as documenting and retaining validation data. The course will cover the various options for initial and continuing DOCs with practical examples.

The course will also discuss the concept of "legally defensible data" and how and why method validation is a key component of this topic.
