ABSTRACT

The US EPA decision to continue to allow use of the herbicide Dicamba (with modified stipulations on applications practices), has fostered an increase in the need for Dicamba and acid herbicide testing by agricultural, food, and environmental laboratories. These compounds have historically been analytically challenging due to their low molecular weight and highly polar nature. Besides a necessity for accurate and reliable data acquisition and quantitation workflows, analyses targeting acid herbicide detection and quantitation must remain robust even in the highly complex agricultural matrices in which they are relevant. Low levels of these residues require sensitive and accurate quantitative analysis in water, grains and other crop commodities, and soil. To address these analytical demands and challenges, a method is described using the SCIEX QTRAP 6500+ system to achieve extremely sensitive and precise detection and quantitation not only for Dicamba, but a suite of related acid herbicides and transformation products identified as being additionally important in these food and environmental samples. Recovery, occurrence, sensitivity, and robustness of the method are assessed and reported for water, soil, and soybean matrices.
