Silky Labie, Environmental Laboratory Consulting and Technology

Silky Labie retired from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection where she was the Department’s Quality Assurance Coordinator for 20 years. She developed the Department’s Quality Assurance Rules and oversaw the development and codifying all Quality-related documents including the Department’s Standard “Operating Procedures Manual for Field Activities (SOPs)” and “Process for Assessing Data Usability”, a guide for DEP programs for assessing data and making decisions on qualified results.

She spent 15 years as a chemist in the FDEP’s Environmental Chemistry Laboratory and the Department of Agriculture’s Food Laboratory.

Silky has been involved with the National Environmental Accreditation since 1993. She has been active on many committees within The NELAC Institute (TNI) including Quality Systems, Policy, and the Assessor Forum and served several positions on the NELAC Board of Directors.

She served a 6-year term as an appointed member to the Environmental Laboratory Advisory Board (ELAB).

After retiring from the state, she and her husband, John, established a consulting service, ELCAT, LLC. Their specialty is training on sampling and analysis topics, as well as providing consulting services to laboratories and field operations for data review and validation and audits.

Silky is a member of the American Chemical Society, American Society for Quality, National Environmental Safety and Health Training Association, TNI, and a life-time member of FSEA.
