ABSTRACT

Field sampling and measurement activities present unique challenges that cannot always be anticipated or controlled through written procedures alone. From equipment failures and unexpected environmental conditions to communication breakdowns, staffing limitations, and difficult sampling locations, field personnel must routinely make decisions that affect safety, data quality, and regulatory compliance.

Drawing on experience in field operations, laboratory management, and third-party assessments, this presentation will explore practical lessons learned from the perspective of both a Field Sampling and Measurement Organization (FSMO) and an assessor. Real-world examples will highlight common operational challenges, including inadequate planning, missing equipment, adverse weather, wildlife encounters, equipment malfunctions, and customer communication issues.

The presentation will also examine recurring deficiencies identified during assessments, such as incomplete calibration records, missing documentation, deviations from established procedures, and contamination-control concerns.

Attendees will gain practical insights into improving field readiness, strengthening quality management practices, recognizing potential nonconformities, and implementing preventive measures that support defensible environmental data.
