Good Laboratory Practice Series: Understanding Basic Measurements

This training helps lab personnel learn and understand traceability of measurements and how to ensure traceability is documented for basic measurements. This three part series presents a review of traceability in the first part and the remaining parts present traceability of temperature and mass.

This training series consists of the three classes listed below.

Date Time Class
7/7/20 11am - 2pm Part 1: Traceability of Measurements (Review)
7/23/20 11am - 2pm Part 2: How to Measure temperature
7/30/20 11am - 2pm Part 3: How to Measure Mass
All times Eastern

Part 1: Traceability of Measurements (Review)
1. The reason
2. Do you always need traceability?
3. TNI requirements and The New ISO/IEC 17025:2017
4. Reference standards and Reference materials
5. Equipment calibration (e.g.; timers, pipets, pH, etc.)

Part 2: How to Measure temperature
Traceable to the SI
Correction factors
How to calibrate a thermometer
Liquid in glass thermometer (mercury & alcohol) Digital (electronic)
Infrared thermometer
Thermocouple
Thermistor
When to calibrate or verify the thermometer Reporting temperature on the test report
Keeping records
TNI requirements for support equipment or analytical equipment

Part 3: How to Measure Mass
Traceable to the SI
Correction factors
How to calibrate balances and scales
Balance analytical
Scale (various types such as top loaders) When to calibrate or verify the balance or scale Reporting methods that include mass (e.g.; solids)
Keeping records
TNI requirements for support equipment or analytical equipment

Audience: Lab managers, QA officers, analysts, assessors

Learning Outcome: The course objective is to learn how to ensure traceability in basic measurements and understand the concept of measurement traceability as defined in the TNI standard. A review of traceability is presented for temperature and mass as examples of measurement traceability.
