On December 30, 2013, the California Department of Health notified the NELAP Accreditation Council of its intent to withdraw from TNI’s National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP) as a result of problems observed by TNI during its evaluation process.. The NELAP Accreditation Council is working to assist laboratories affected by this change, and is taking the following actions:
- NELAP will inform California that it has accepted its notice of intent effective January 31, 2014.
- NELAP will contact all laboratories that hold a primary NELAP accreditation with California by January 13 with a transition plan that will allow them to obtain NELAP accreditation from another NELAP Accreditation Body in a timely fashion.
- NELAP will continue to discuss with California their plans for granting accreditation to NELAP labs not located in California and make this information generally available. California has informed TNI that secondary certificates issued by California will continue to be recognized until their expiration date in 2014.
